The unique combination of superb facilities, highly motivated students, a rich musical environment, and the Colorado Rocky Mountains makes this Chamber Music of the Rockies a memorable and rewarding experience. The Vilar Performing Arts Center and other resort facilities provide a pleasant chamber music setting. A shuttle bus service is available between various lodging, concert, restaurant, and rehearsal facilities. Chamber Music of the Rockies meets concurrently with the Colorado Suzuki Institute and shares some common faculty.
Chamber Music of the Rockies is open to advanced students of the violin, viola, and cello. Minimum playing and reading levels are established for each instrument. Note that a certain level of maturity is necessary for students to cope with the audition process and the more public nature of the instruction in the Chamber Music of the Rockies program. While there are no age limits, high school students may adapt more easily to this intense experience than younger students. Other rewarding options are available in the Suzuki Institute for advanced level students who choose not to participate in the Chamber Music of the Rockies program, or who do not secure a place because of limited space.
Minimum performance levels should be equivalent to:
Violin: Mozart Concerto no. 5 in D Major
Viola: Bach Suite in G Major
Cello: Bach Suite No. 1 in G Major
Chamber Music of the Rockies reserves the right to limit certain instruments to insure the proper balance for ensembles.
The Jupiter String Quartet and the LK String Quartet performs and coaches all ensembles. The daily schedule includes 2-3 chamber music ensembles, chamber music seminar, instrument lesson, and individual practice. Students are placed into ensembles based upon taped auditions recommendations. Pre-formed ensembles may apply as a group. In addition, students may audition to perform on the Student Solo Honors Recitals. The faculty of the Colorado Suzuki Institute teaches the private lessons.
The JUPITER STRING QUARTET has just been awarded the Cleveland Quartet Award by Chamber Music America, a prize which “honors and promotes a rising young string quartet whose artistry demonstrates that it is in the process of establishing a major career.” They have also been selected to join Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two for a three-year residency beginning in 2007, and have been awarded the Netherland America Prize, which will sponsor a tour of the Netherlands in the Spring of 2008. In 2004 the quartet captured the Grand Prize in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and First Prize in the 8th Banff International String Quartet Competition, where they were also awarded the Szekely Prize for the best performance of a Beethoven quartet. The Austin Critics Table honored them with the Award for Outstanding Chamber Music Performance in 2006.
The Jupiter String Quartet places a strong emphasis on developing relationships with future classical music audiences through outreach work in the school system and educational performances. They also enjoy working with aspiring chamber musicians, and have served on the faculties of the chamber music programs at the Colorado Suzuki Institute in 2005 and the Austin Chamber Music Festival. From 2004-06, the Jupiter String Quartet was enrolled in the Professional String Quartet Training Program, earning Master of Music degrees in Chamber Music, at The New England Conservatory. They still reside in Boston.
